U.S. Attorney in Detroit Expects to Wrap Up Interviews of Middle Eastern Men Soon

DETROIT (AP) - Federal officials hoped to complete the interviews of hundreds of mostly Middle Eastern men in southeastern Michigan by Jan. 21, an assistant U.S. attorney said Wednesday.
Bob Cares, assistant U.S. attorney in charge of the area's terrorism task force, said the interviews were going well, but he didn't know how many had been completed as of Wednesday.

As of Dec. 21, more than 160 interviews had been completed. Officials sent letters to nearly 500 men in the southeastern part of the state requesting interviews. About 300 responded by Dec. 21, and officials tried to personally contact those who didn't. Seven people declined to be interviewed.

The Michigan men are among about 5,000 nationwide that federal officials wanted to interview. The interviews were to be completed by Dec. 21, but some states extended the deadline.

Michigan is home to about 350,000 Arab-Americans, most of them in the southeast part of the state.
