John, It is true that the same folks who crow over economic successes overseas are tough to find when those same economies blow up.

I don't think that all foreigners hate us. Many simply envy us and want to kill us so they can grab our wealth. There's nothing hostile in that. <g> However, we have never been super popular in Latin America. Those folks just don't understand that they cannot elect govt's we don't like without taking the chance of being invaded. And many can't get over the fact that no matter what country they are from, if they are in California, they are Mexicans, if they are in New York, they are Puerto Ricans, and if they are in Florida, they are Cubans. I've actually heard the phrase "that nice Mexican boy from Honduras." <g> Of course, we are so unpopular that I have also heard Americans describe themselves as Canadians when they are in Latin America.

I do have some problem with folks comparing Argentina's problems with the great story in Brazil. Some folks I met in Massachussets last summer told me they were just back from Brazil and it was a mess. They seem very reliable, though they do like to gamble in Connecticut. <g>
