IDNX and VSNX compete head to head in one market -- "tenprinter" machines that go for up to $50K apiece and are used for police checks -- but address complementary markets otherwise. Identix is dominant in fingerprint authentication ("I am who I say I am") while VSNX is the apparent leader in facial recognition ("That's the terrorist over there -- that one"). Fingerprint authentication technology is much further along in precision, size, and price points. It also has a potentially huge commercial market. Facial recognition is getting good play in the press, but there are serious questions about how it might scale (the bigger the database used, the more overwhelming the false positives experienced to real hits), and how intrusive it may be. FR is essentially a police application, although it can be adapted to authentication uses.

I'm long IDNX, and very skeptical about VSNX's FR potential.
