bmw
I posted some relevan semi-rumors on amd thread.
To summarize:
1) you maybe right about p4 higher unit shipments but intel's celeron shipments are way below expectations. Lower p4 and athlon prices taking market share from celeron.
2) Samsung may start shipping athlons this quarter
3) Even though that amd is shipping more than expected there are still shortages so someone is buying
4) If I recall correctly the current expectation is above 8 mil with some putting it considerably above 8mil

re: If Intel still loses market share, that's because the total available market increased enough so that AMD could have taken a larger piece of the pie.
1) implies that that may not be the case. Of course, given Barrett's claims of gains in unit market share over the last 2-3 quarters I expect intel to use every trick in the book....

wbmw, you forget about the delay ( latency :) ) of CPU to retail shelves. What we saw on the shelves during the last 4-6 weeks was sold to OEMs at the end of Q3/beginning of Q4. There are indications of XPs starting to appear at retail now and those must have been sold in Q4 sometime. I wouldn't write off AMD in the US retail just yet.
