Let's not forget while engaged in the dividend debate that unpaid dividends (net earnings exclusive of cash needs) accumulate, building up a company's cash hoard.

The stock price is (or should be) reflective of the cash on hand. If a shareholder sells his stock, he is selling accumulated unpaid "dividends" and receiving the proceeds as surely as if he were paid a quarterly amount. Microsoft's share price is no doubt reflective of its $38bn hoard.

As to Q, well, there is a cash hoard, but we could debate its source until the cows come home.
