And concerning living standards in Europe: I think it isn't that easy to compare those. Our health and social care system is much better than in the US but we have higher unemployment and in some areas less "freedom". If you are rich you are probably better off in the US but for the middle and lower class Europe is the better place to be IMO. Of course, the downfall of this is that we have to pay much more money for health, unemployment and pensions. And since the entire society in Europe is getting older and older because of low birth rates it's becoming more and more difficult to finance all those things. There have been already severe cuts in some areas and I believe there will be many more in the future.

Andreas, but what do you think will happen over time with the inequities that exist between regions in the EU? Do you think the analogy of the American North and South that I posted to Peter is an apt one? And what about AMD? Will Europe continue to be a good customer now that the EU is more in control?

BTW, I saw this report on the Druge Report today:

drudgereport.com;

First, P. Buchanan is representative of a long line of conservative American authors who fear the white race is headed for extinction. While there are truths intermingled within his commentary, the main motivator for his suppositions is fear.

I can't predict nor can he what will happen in the future but any decline in the US or Europe will not be as a result of the dark hordes or our unwillingness to reproduce. His view of a possible future is just one of many. I mean who could have predicted the EU just 15 years ago or the fall of the Berlin Wall? Twenty years ago, some public American commentator made the prediction that the white race would be mostly long gone by the new millenium due to intermarriage and low birth rates; that the ones remaining would be treated badly. This bs gets old fast.

I think we need to put aside our fear and try to understand each other a little better. The world isn't big enough for all this fear and we run the risk of blowing ourselves up if we don't learn to channel it into something more productive.......at least that's my very quick reaction to this Drudge Report.

While Buchanan is of course exaggerating there's much truth in it IMO. Those problems will be big challenges for Europe in the future.
