LG Electronics Says It Expects 2002 Sales to Rise 10%
(Update2)

Seoul, Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- LG Electronics Inc., Korea's second-largest electronics maker, said sales are expected to rise 10 percent this year, helped by digital television sales.

The company expects 2002 sales to rise to 17 trillion won ($13 billion), said spokesman Oh Sea Chun, who did not provide 2001 comparison figure.

LG Electronics is trying to persuade investors it will no longer sacrifice profit by financing projects for weaker affiliates. The company is splitting off investments in affiliates to allow it to focus on making mobile phones, televisions and air conditioners.

``Korea is ahead of the U.S. in terms of digital-TV broadcasting,'' said Tony Jung, an analyst at Good Morning Securities Co. in Seoul. ``The digital business will probably see some growth by the second half of 2002 and such sentiment probably helped its stock price last year.''

LG Electronics' stock price rose 108 percent in 2001. The company is expected to post 17.1 trillion won in sales for 2001, according to the mean forecast of 17 analysts surveyed by IBES International Inc. The company expects 2002 operating margin to be 6 percent to 7 percent, Oh said, declining to specify the amount.
