NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - After falling a little more than 1 percent in 2001, corporate spending on information technology in the United States and Europe this year is likely to rise almost 3 percent, with Europe leading the upturn, a Wall Street brokerage forecast Wednesday.

According to a survey of the chief information officers at 75 U.S. and 35 European corporations, Merrill Lynch estimates that IT budgets declined about 1.1 percent last year, with the U.S. leading the way lower.

As a whole, U.S. respondents said their spending levels in 2001 declined 2.8 percent from 2000. Meanwhile, European respondents said they spent 2.6 percent more than they did in 2000.

At the same time, the survey showed Europe leading the way higher in 2002, when IT budgets on average are expected to rise 3 percent from 2001's levels.
