Intel set to unveil mobile P4 product line this year

Intel Philippines plans to launch its entire mobile product line including the Mobile Pentium 4 in the first quarter of this year and scale up its Intel Architecture (IA).

"We're relying on the advanced capabilities of our chip design features such as those of the Pentium 4 processor to deliver a personal digital experience to desktop PC user whether they are computer gaming fanatics, MP3 enthusiasts or budding filmmakers manipulating video," said Ricky Banaag, Intel Microelectronics Philippines, Inc.

Banaag said he expects the enterprise market for Intel chips growing at 18 percent volume growth and aims for a dramatic expansion of Xeon and Itanium processors.

He also foresees a reentry in the volume server chipset business as Intel is also working to accelerate other technologies designed to improve computing platform, bus and interconnect performance.

"By extending our vision beyond the traditional measures of performance and tailoring processor and platform enhancements to specific market segments and customer requirements, Intel will help bring more intelligence, greater capabilities and a new level of pervasiveness and usefulness to computing," Banaag added.

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, is expected to expand its products and technology development focus beyond the processor speed to bring market fundamental technologies that will enable greater productivity and better experience for computer users.

The company would also focus its global business by investing in its channel partners, a renewed focus on emerging markets and the ongoing development of products, manufacturing and process technologies.

Banaag noted that Intel's channel sales volume grew and achieved record sales increased in the third quarter due to the growing small-to-medium and emerging markets.

In Asia, Intel's channels had exhibited a 46 percent growth in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2000.

Intel has over 1,250 local market and training events for its 25,000-strong reseller base. The company remains committed to its channel partners and would continue to support them particularly those PC users shifting to the Pentium 4 processor.

The Intel Pentium 4 processor continued to be the top selling desktop processor and is on track to ship the 0.13 microarchitecture Pentium 4 processor in the fourth quarter of 2001 with the new i845 DDR platform.

In 2002, Intel intends to ship the 3Ghz Pentium 4 and would continue to drive the chipset market segment share growth with the integrated graphics in the second quarter.

The Pentium 4 microarchitecture is expected to scale to 10 Ghz during its lifetime. Intel also plans to release the Intel Netburst microarchitecture based core for the Intel Celeron processor by the middle of 2002.

"The full transition to 0.13 microarchitecture process technology and the introduction of the world's fastest processors not only demonstrate Intel's leadership in raw computing power but also presents a clear indication of our drive to promote future industry growth by greatly increasing computing capabilities," Banaag added.

Intel has earlier opened its newest dedicated high-volume microprocessor manufacturing facility using the company's advanced 0.13 micron process.

The company invested $2 billion to construct and equip the new facility, Fab 22, located in Chandler, Arizona., which will produce microprocessors based on Intel's copper-based 0.13 micron process technology on 200 mm wafers.

The 0.13 micron technology enables the world's fastest transistor in production, which is the foundation for fast microprocessors.

The circuits created by this technology are so small that it would take roughly 1,000 of them to equal the thickness of a human hair.

Fab 22 is located on Intel's 705-acre Ocotillo campus in Chandler, near Intel's existing Fab 12. The new fab contains approximately 133,000 square feet of cleanroom space out of a total of 360,000 square feet that make up the facility.

A new four-story, 320,000 square foot manufacturing support building and a 123,000 square foot central utility building were also completed as part of the project.

Fab 22 was built in a record 18 months, with an exemplary safety record and by more than 4,200 construction workers.

More than 1,000 engineers, technicians and support people have already been hired to work at Fab 22. Intel currently employs 10,000 people in Chandler.
