Taiwan Govt to Unveil Plans for Hsinchu Biomedical Park in April

sg.news.yahoo.com

TAIPEI, Jan 3 Asia Pulse - Plans for a biomedical research park in Taiwan's northern Hsinchu County are expected to be unveiled in April, said an official of the nation's highest planning agency.
Chang Kuei-lin, director of the Sectoral Planning Department of the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD), said the initial plan is for a 38-hectare plot for a medical center, which will include a cancer center, a proton center and a general hospital, as well as an 18-hectare plot for biotech industry facilities.

Chang made the remarks at a seminar on the biotech industry sponsored by the legislature's high-tech and information committee in which officials from a biotech industry task force, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the CEPD, the National Science Council and various other experts were invited to participate.

Chang noted that the biomedical park will be defined as a national project and that National Taiwan University, National Chiao Tong University, National Tsinghua University, National Yang Ming University, Academia Sinica, Veterans General Hospital, the National Health Institute and other research institutes will all be involved.

It is estimated that the government will have to spend NT$9.7 billion (US$277.14 million) to acquire the land needed for the park and that at least 40 percent of the funds will have to be funneled from the private sector, while the government will be responsible for the infrastructure and research facilities.
