>>WASHINGTON — The number of women making gift purchases on the Internet this holiday season outnumbered men for the first time, as the ranks of Web users began to resemble the U.S. population as a whole, according to a study released yesterday.
Women made about 58 percent of online purchases, reported the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which surveyed 4,052 adults. Women accounted for about 50 percent of Web transactions during the 2000 holiday season, project director Lee Rainie said.

The profile of Internet users is starting to mirror that of consumers offline, where women are responsible for most purchases. Women, who make up 51 percent of the U.S. population, control 80 percent of household spending, according to consumer-trend expert Faith Popcorn.

"This is part of a larger story about the mainstreaming of the Internet," said Rainie, who said most early Web users were men with a background in technology.


Overall, the number of adults shopping on the Internet rose to about 29 million this holiday season, each one spending an average of $392. A year earlier, about 20 million adults bought gifts online, spending an average of $330, the survey said.

"It was a very strong season," said Dan Hess, vice president of ComScore Networks, an Internet-research firm. Fourth-quarter Internet purchases will total about $10.5 billion, 15 percent more than the $9.13 billion in last year's fourth quarter, he said.

The increase in holiday Web shopping was primarily driven by convenience, not because of terrorism worries after the Sept. 11 attacks, the survey found. Mall traffic was down, too.

The poll, conducted Nov. 19 to Dec. 23, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
