HONG KONG, China -- Asian stocks drove ahead again heading into Thursday afternoon.

Though back off the morning highs, Korean stocks were the center of attention again. The Kospi was up 1.0 percent at 732.18 going into afternoon trade, local time.

Chip stocks have had a fiery start to 2002. Hynix Semiconductor finished morning trade in Seoul up 5.8 percent at 2,940 won.

The world's No. 3 maker of memory chips said Wednesday it will raise prices, which dropped more than 90 percent during 2001.

It is also set to complete talks with Micron Technology on a merger by the end of January, according to executives.

Chip stocks got another boost overnight from a report in the United States, showing worldwide chip sales rose in November for the second straight month.
