The perpetual ideological/philosophical war we are engaged in is over the degree to which our culture is driven by secular materialism. The extremes are a godless state devoid of any religious foundation and, at the other end, theocracy, both of which have generated massive suffering throughout history and continue to do so today. Both extremes are demonstrably bleak worlds of uniformity, regimented and devoid of virtually any freedoms we enjoy. To me Falwell represents a strong tendency toward one extreme, which is just as unpalatable as the other.
