Anybody else notice that now in the U.S. the phones are ahead of the network? According to the release from Qualcomm, 1X phones are now shipping to all 29 CDMA carriers. Yet we still do not know when the networks will be turned on to utilize these phones. Compare this situation to Sonera in Finland, which turned on the UMTS network this week, but does not expect phones until 2003.

Report: Spurrier resigns from Florida

January 4, 2002

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- It appears Steve Spurrier is finally ready
to put his hat in the NFL ring.

The Gainesville Sun is reporting that Spurrier, who turned the University of
Florida into a college football power, will resign as coach of his alma mater to
possibly pursue an NFL job.

The school has not confirmed the report. A spokesperson said "nothing has
been scheduled for this time."

Ironically, the reported resignation comes on the same day coach Dennis
Green and the Minnesota Vikings parted ways. The San Diego Chargers also
have a coaching vacancy.

There is speculation the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may also fire Tony Dungy
if they lose in the wild card round to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Florida won the national championship in 1996, six Southeastern Conference
titles and as many as 10 games nine times in Spurrier's 12 years at the
school. His 122 victories at Florida ranks as the best win total in history for a
major college coach in his first 12 years at the school.

The Gators were 10-2 this past season, but lost a chance to play for the
national championship when they fell to Tennessee in their regular-season
finale. Florida capped its season with a 56-23 trouncing of Maryland in the
Orange Bowl on Wednesday.

The Heisman Trophy winner as a quarterback in 1966, Spurrier was signed
through the 2006 season.
