I remember a couple of decades ago seeing a copy of "Stars and Stripes", the US military newspaper and being pleasantly surprised by the quality of it.

The idea of a well-paid high-ability voluntary military service appeals to me. The idea of conscripts is unappealing, even if their enslavement is temporary. Slavery and press-gangs are from another era and have no place in modern society where freedom is the byword. Freedom means voluntary action. Compulsion is totalitarianism, however it's dressed up.

Without security and protection of property, nothing else can stand. Given the complexity of modern threats, a high-ability military service is essential. The old style of rank and file of spare, landless, young males marching off to the battlefield to boost territorial conquest is over [though they still operate like that in Mugabeland].
