<<Are you talking about the one immediately south of the Common? >>

Yes I am. The appeal of that place is two-fold, I think. One, if you observe the way people are dressed, it is readily apparent that most are not locals; they are at Chang's 'cause they're staying at one of the hotels nearby. Two, the "locals" who do eat there are suburbanites (likely in town for a show) who wouldn't know good Chinese food from your tasteless Win-Dixie tomatoes, and are also probably scared to death of our Chinatown and would rather eat in the Disney-fied sterilized area around Newbury Street and the Four Seasons. I must admit that I am sort-of guilty of this myself; when I have out-of-town guests (like my parents) I tend to take them to Chang's as I don't think they'd cope well with my favorite local Chinese places (in terms of the neighborhood and overall ambiance, not the food of course).

Cheers

<<Never understood the attraction of that place, what with some of the great places just a few blocks away in Chinatown.>>

The attraction is all the cool chrome-and-glass they have! So what if the food's no better than yer local privately owned Szechuan take out place...style over substance, baby!
