We send aid to the Soviets during WWII

Correct, Tim - massive aid in the form of "lend-lease," a euphemism for give-away. And after the war, we offered the Soviets participation in the Marshall Plan for rebuilding their economy, which they refused.

The USA is the most selfless and generous great power the world has ever known ... a nation devoted to promoting democracy and freedom for all peoples. It is not the fault of the U.S. that in many instances when the yoke of colonialism has been released, immature societies have fallen under the dictatorship of their own home-grown despots. In the case of South Korea, for example, after repelling the invasion from the north, we tried mightily to find and support a native democratic government, without success.

I will never understand why some people who live in a country so dedicated to doing good, only seem to find pleasure in looking under every rock to uncover something, anything, that they can criticize about their nation.

OBL and Saddam Hussein have become the most well recognized enemies of our nation. Each of these men at one time were granted our support and held up as prominant allies of our nation. There is an old saying, "war makes strange bedfellows" or something like that. OK that can excuse some of the oversites of the past. These people have now been exposed for their despotism. Now we are waging a very serious concern against terrorism. There are many tyrannical despot wannabees still out there. I don't see any attention being paid to the mistakes of the past. I fear that they will be repeated.

People who have lived under tyranny and oppression for many generations tend to have weak personalities when it comes to having a conscience about world affairs. To put it bluntly they tend to be selfish and difficult. Remember the difficult time Moses had leading the newly freed slaves from Egypt. The people had a good purpose but lacked resolve and a sense of commitment to the greater good. Yet these are the people who could work toward a better society.

The people living under tyranny today know their own plight and see the need to have a more just system. When a super power comes along to slap the hands of their oppressors they are not likely to reform governments toward liberty for all. They are more likely to scramble to claim the biggest piece of the booty and fight to hold their ground. They are not likely to feel trememdous gratitude for our support either. Again remember the complaining and contention that Moses had to deal with.

To be successful we must dig in for the long hall, educate ourselves on the culture, be prepared for difficult social struggles, work to understand the culture of the people we are involved with, be patient, have fortitude and compassion for people who may resent us.
