ECRI weekly index plunges in Dec 28 week

NEW YORK, Jan 4 (Reuters) - A weekly index of U.S. economic activity fell sharply to a three-month low in the latest week, dampening hopes for an economic recovery early next year, the Economic Cycle Research Institute said on Friday.

ECRI's Weekly Leading Index slipped to 114.9 in the week ended Dec. 28 from 120.2 in the previous week.

A huge drop in mortgage applications was mostly to blame for the slide in the index, ECRI said.

``Mortgage applications fell something like 40 percent from their record highs,'' said Anirvan Banerji, ECRI research director.

Banerji said this week's drop could be an anomaly and that he would take a wait-and-see approach before calling the timing of an economic rebound.

The index's growth rate, which compares the four-week moving average with its behavior over the preceding year, also fell, to -1.4 percent from -0.2 percent.

The Weekly Leading Index is composed of a balance of seven major economic indicators. ECRI designs short- and long-term indexes aimed at predicting business cycles, recessions and recoveries in the world's leading economies.
