Hi Pearly. I think nutrition has a lot to do with it also.

People have healthier foods, (i.e. less diseased, etc) and use vitamins more than they did years ago.

Women deliver healthier babies as a result.

But how do you measure the effect if any, on IQ?

PB, DNA, nutrition, sensory interaction, pollution [lead, mercury other] make intelligence what it is.

Lead levels have been IQ-damaging for a century and more. Lead paint on water-collection corrugated iron roofs, lead water pipes, lead aerosol from engines dropping out on food, in water, on surfaces and directly ingested. With blood lead levels commonly at 20 and even 30 ug/100ml, there are IQ deficits of about 5 caused in children who grow up in those environments.

Mercury was all over the place too. As a child I watched a dental nurse half-heartedly mixing mercury and silver by hand to put in my teeth. Not all the mercury would have been properly mixed. Fortunately, I had few fillings as a child and they had better mixing when I was a bit older. Mercury really smashes brains.

Nutrition has been pathetic for centuries. It's still bad. Sure, the major deficiency diseases such as goitre, rickets, pellagra, scurvy and the like aren't seen much, but subclinical deficiencies are rampant. Doctors now recommend folic acid for pregnant women, vitamin A and other supplements. Brains can't grow without construction materials.

Neuron links and development depends on stimulation and interaction with the external world. That doesn't mean inflicting stimulation on the infant. It means ensuring they have a challenging world to interacts with and guidance as requested on problem-solving methods.

DNA provides the plan. Buildings are not built without plans and the plans define the outcome. Every single person has their own plan. Groups of related people have similar plans. The average of those groups is different. Intelligence is multifaceted and different groups have different abilities in various facets of intelligence. It's funny that people want there to be no difference between group averages.

Racism is pretending that individuals match group averages and treating them according to their group rather than their individual character.

Okay, it's off topic and I'll drop it.
