Adtran Warns on Fourth-Quarter Earnings
HUNTSVILLE. Ala. (Reuters) - Adtran Inc. (Nasdaq:ADTN - news), which makes digital transmission equipment for the telecommunications industries, on Friday said the sluggish economy had hurt sales, and increased its bad-debt allowance because of difficulties at one of its distributors.

The Huntsville, Alabama-based company said it would earn between 9 cents and 10 cents in the fourth quarter, including a charge of 6 cents related to problems at one of its telecom distributors.

Analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial, had expected the company to report earnings of 16 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

Adtran said it expected to post revenues of about $89 million in the period ended Dec. 31.

``The economic slowdown continued to affect our sales during the quarter,'' Adtran Chief Executive Officer Mark Smith in a statement.
