Greenlaw: crude oil rises on signs that producers are reducing supplies.
``It's slowly dawning on people that the cuts they are making are real,'' said Jan Stuart, head of global research at ABN Amro Inc. in New York. ``The Saudis, Iranians and Kuwaitis are unambiguously adjusting their January loading programs.''

``The early signs are that they will make cuts and try to adhere to the new quotas,'' said Phil Flynn, a senior energy trader at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago. ``For the first couple months of this year there will be substantial cuts'' from OPEC and non-OPEC producers.

``When a market makes a move like this, speculators don't stop to think about what might be causing it; they have no choice, their money is gone,'' he said. ``What we are seeing is speculators getting out of short positions, no doubt about it.'' said Ed Silliere, vice president of risk management at Energy Merchant LLC in New York.
