"Well, Jewel, just what is our responsibility?
My Opinion: The gifts of this world are wasted on pleasure seeking and selfish vanities. What we are given in this world is in and of itself a responsibility. America has been given great wealth and with that wealth comes responsibility. Our culture is founded on principle and our citizenry is raised to honor the principles of human decency and compassion. This is a gift and with it comes responsibility. We have been given the greatest military power the world has ever known and with that power comes the responsibility to use it only toward just ends.

"We have been bashed many times for meddling in the domestic affairs of other countries. It seems to be a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't." Well I never promised you a rose garden. So, at the risk of being criticized we should do nothing? Sounds like blackmail to me.

"I see a barren landscape in Afghanistan for finding any kind of remotely viable democratic government." And yet the educated people of Afghanistan outspokenly cry for a democracy. However, they are not likely to rise to power. People who have lived under generations of oppression are not the most collaborative or compassionate people in the world. They tend toward taking care of number 1, and assume everyone else is like minded. The Afghan people are scrambling to survive, hold on to what little they have, and align themselves with the powers that are most likely to be there in the future.

"Would the world applaud us if we make Afghanistan a colonial outpost of ours and manage its affairs for the foreseeable future? No way. It is dehumanising and humiliating to be colonized. All of us need to feel the dignity of self determination.

"And just how many other countries, on how many other continents, need the same help? You have been given dominion over the entire world, you have responsibility for every creature and every clean or dirty thing in the world.

"Is this truly America's responsibility?" The well being of the world and the creatures who inhabit it is the responsibility of every human being. What ever our resources are and wherever we find our sphere of influence is our responsibility.

"I am not baiting you here, but rather posing these questions honestly." Good, and I have given answers that I honestly believe are true and just. IMO

Have Peace
