PB, I grew up in a recycling family. We threw out nothing [back in 1970]. I was an environmentalist as a child from when I realized what was wrecking my 4 year old playground and fishing grounds and air [full of midges and sewage treatment stinks - that was in Mangere Bridge].

What's funny is that now I find myself lectured to by new-age extremist wackoes who recognize no costs or balance. We have had a young guy killed by being crushed in a roadside recycling machine. It is absurd and expensive to have recycling the way we do it here. It's done for 'the good look' rather than rationality. It would be better to collect everything and sort it at a central place in safe, well-managed conditions. Efficiency would be vastly better.

Similarly, a couple of decades ago, I decided that one day I would get my wish about the UN and some serious rules for running the show. Then, maniacs would want to turn the UN into an Orwellian nightmare and I'll be manning the barricades to oppose it in defence of human freedom. They'll lecture me about how internationalism is good etc, etc ad nauseum.

Meanwhile, I'll take the chance because the present system of MAD is mad. Neighbours don't get along with mutual death threats and neither should countries. Neighbourliness is nice.

PS: Have you phoned Charles yet? You haven't have you!! Do it now! Oh, hang on, it's 3am there [more or less depending on the stupid daylight savings business - oh for internet time]. Better wait until the morning....
