Thanks UF for taking the trouble to dig that up and correcting me. The original [as shown there anyway - we should always be circumspect about believing pixels on a screen rather than the actual object] does indeed say "unalienable" and I shall use that form.

It's interesting how the effect of life and government seems to be independent of such documents, constitutions, laws and the like and social context seems to rule the day. Life in NZ is much the same as life in the USA, Japan, Europe, and elsewhere. Cultural norms seem to flow around the world, unimpeded by the official rules, which get changed to match the social context rather than the social context adapting to the rules laid down.

Hence, slavery continued despite the fine words. Homosexuals were persecuted and attacked until very recent times. Women were de-chattelized in the freedom-loving lands we love not all that long before the Taleban were ousted. Some brides are still 'given away' by loving Dads here and I suppose there.

I wonder where we're going next. We don't know where we're going, but we're on our way. Like it or not.
