The major thrust of the article is "leave-us-alone conservatism". Mind if we examine that a bit closer?

1. The Oregon voters on the right to die legislation.

2. The California voters on marijuana for the terminally ill and other diseased conditions.

3. The expansion of Federal emminent domain to exact property from citizens for the benefit of the energy companies.

4. Excluding federal funding to organizations that don't support right to life positions. [Attempting to limit choice]

5. Banning federal funding of cloning research to a limited number of cell families; effectively limiting the development of treatments for a variety of diseases.

6. Monitor communications between a client and his/her attorney.

Not very "leave-us-alone conservatism", at least as it applies to the people.

On the other hand, where do we see "leave-us-alone conservatism"?

1. Don't interefere with the energy companies in California.

2. Don't interfere too much with Microsoft.

3. Don't interfere with the companies violating Health and Safety standards.

4. Encourage "voluntary compliance" by companies on environmental standards. Like Monsanto, pumping PCBs into the ground and water.

So there you have "leave-us-alone conservatism", leave the corporations alone and help out the religious right; screw the people. You bought into the rhetoric. One could go back into "the record", and generate far more examples, but you and Michael Cummings, et al, will still buy into the rhetoric, so what would be the point?
