Ciena Seeks Expansion

A self-described gorilla, Ciena thinks it is going to put on another few pounds. And it cannot wait. The global network infrastructure company seems to think that service providers are going to want to extend its reach to the end-user with long-haul optical networks and multiple-ringed Metro optical networks. And Anup Changaroth, director, Marketing, Ciena Asia, thinks in order to do that, service providers are going to demand for scalable, flexible, and cost-effective intelligent optical fabric, because the cost of continuing with existing legacy solutions will become even more prohibitive.

Changaroth thinks Ciena is well-poised to capture a large chunk of that demand. “Ciena is the proven market leader, the gorilla if you will, of the intelligent optical networking solutions space,” he claims.

Other trends in which he sees Ciena capitalising on include the desire of service providers to reduce their capital spending and operational costs, and the continued convergence between packet switching and TDM architectures. Says Changaroth: “With continued uncertainty in the global economy, one clear trend is that customers are seeking solutions that allow them to spend less but get more. There is little room left for legacy vendors to continue to offer their 10–20 year old optical solutions, when what they term as their next-generation solutions are in fact already available from vendors such as Ciena.”

He adds that technology such as multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) has revolutionised packet switching architectures in allowing them to transport virtually every kind of traffic. “One of the key industry trends that will begin to take hold is the evolution of a unified control plane that ties this packet switching network much more closely to the underlying optical fabric,” says Changaroth.

He explains that the key enabler behind this is the development of nascent technologies being standardised by the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Optical Interworking Forum, such as a unified control plane, generalised multi-protocol label switching, and optical-user to network interface. He adds that Ciena demonstrated this technology last June in the US.

In Asia, Changaroth says that in addition to its Japan office, Ciena has added more offices in Asia-Pacific, including its regional headquarters in Hong Kong, and offices in Korea, and Singapore.

Says Changaroth: “Much of this activity obviously was driven by the growth in business for Ciena within the region. Unlike many other vendors in our sector, we have been very fortunate to see a growth in both our business as well as expertise in the region.”

Specific to Asia, Ciena has scored wins with Japan’s eAccess and China’s Beijing IDN Telecom. Changaroth points out that Ciena has also scored major global deals with Cable & Wireless, Tycom and FLAG, which are global networks that are deployed throughout Asia-Pacific.

As with many vendors in the industry, Ciena has not escaped unscathed from the global recession, but it is weathering it well and will continue to take on a positive view of the Asia-Pacific market, says Changaroth.

“The global downturn has forced service providers to be much wiser about capital spending. While no vendor is immune to the effects of the global downturn, Ciena among them, we have been fortunate in that our corporate focus on next-generation intelligent optical networking solutions is beginning to show dividends. Customers are recognising that the capital they do have available, can be spent on Ciena solutions,” he adds.
