Absolutely

better to leave the proofs alone I think (except for pure fun, which for most people such proofs do not seem to be)
what is, will eventually be come known or it won't
and if it doesn't, does it matter?

Most of the time such "proofs" seem merely designed to insulate people from one another, and of course to give them that delicious group identity- which is always so problematic for people outside the group. This applies to all proofs- not merely the religious ones. There are people just as slavishly devoted to their political philosophies- I've seen plenty on SI. Such incredible alienation results from this sort of thinking, I really don't understand it. But it may not be rational- it may be some very irrational impulse in the human psyche. I don't say it is, but at least that would be some explanation for it that is reasonable..

I recently heard a quote attributed to one of my favorite people, Oscar Wilde. I'll paraphrase because upon a web search I can't verify it. "Those looking for God should look in the garden. He's buried there."
