What happens when you cancel an order, doesn't it disappear from somebody's screen somewhere? I'm wondering why you think it is the MM pulling these orders instead of the person that they are buying and selling for? How do you know that its not someone on the line saying lets see how this first block goes before we sell this next block?

I once asked a friend of mine who was an MM if she did this (put up fake orders and pull them to manipulate price) and she said, "Are you nuts, I could get hit on that order and then I'd be stuck with a bunch of stock I have no business owning, how do I know where the price is going?"

She made her money from institutional order flow. Frequently that involves moving very large blocks of stock for hours, days and weeks at a time. A lot of what she had to do is match what the stock does during the day, a market sweep. In other words you don't want to be caught dumping or buying a big percentage of the block into a short term price movement. You've got 100,000K to move so you spread it out over the trading day (there are so many 15 minute periods and you divide it up equally- in thinly traded issues you might trade it over weeks) so the average price matches the average market price for that day. You don't get cute in these situations simply because you could be WRONG.
