"We will await anxiously."

Firstly, I am honored to know that you and Mrs. D. are both waiting "anxiously" ;-)

In reporting civilian casualties one needs to keep in mind that deaths from fire, disease, etc., due to the breakdown of essential services such as hospitals and fire fighters, cannot be factored into the equation. In addition, bombing raids destroyed thousands of records. In the case of Japan there were deaths from radiation long after the war was over.

Your site also overlooks the fact that many thousands died in different island attacks as well as, for instance, the many civilian suicides at Okinawa to avoid being "conquered".

So it is really impossible to guage the deaths of civilians because so many of them occur indirectly or at a later time.

Be that as it may! If indeed you have identified an inaccuracy in my post of Dec. 21 (And I do believe, after looking at several web sites, that my off-the-cuff estimate may have been on the high side--probably even after factoring in the radiation effects long term, etc)--then your "anxious" waiting has been well rewarded!<ggg>

I will try to find some research on the long range health effects of radioactive poisoning throughout Japan; but you will forgive me if I save the task for another day;-)

Good find, Dithers!

Thank you for correcting that figure from Dec 21! Better late than never!;-)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Mr. Dithers; but unfortunately, the link you provided on geocities was inaccurate and only gave the atom bomb deaths. It turns out that there were indeed "millions of deaths": two million for sure--without even calculating the factors I mentioned in my first response to you.

I am certainly glad to discover that I did not let an inaccuracy creep into one of my posts. Damn close call!

It seems I cannot throw you a sop even when I try, Mr. Dithers! <ggg>

Take care now!
