Did you send that comment to Honda?

Honda knows all about it. My Acura is five years old and they were well aware of it when I first complained. I've gone several rounds with them. And several rounds with the National Highway Safety Transportation folks as well. There are some pending legal actions out there but I don't keep up with them. Honda's position is that their seat belts are designed with a delicate balance and any alteration distorts that balance. They caution you in their manual not to even put those cushioning sheepskin covers over the shoulder harness for fear of disrupting the effectiveness. Hey, I'd rather distort the grip of the harness a little bit than have it slit my throat--but they don't see it that way. My conclusion is that they're more concerned about lawsuits than customer safety or car sales.

Honda makes wonderful cars. My Acura is a dream and I've had friends who have loved their Accords. If you decide you want one, I'd suggest you take your daughter with you and make sure the belt fits right before you sign on the dotted line. I'm 5'3", hardly a midget.

[FWIW, the saleswoman who sold me my Acura, babbling all the while about the attentive and luxury treatment Acura provides for purchasers of its luxury cars, said she just puts her shoulder harness behind her back to avoid the problem. She couldn't understand my concern about seatbelts at all. I hope she never has an accident with the seatbelt in that position.

And in case you're wondering how I ended up in this situation, the parts department wasn't open when I bought my car. I told the saleswoman that I planned to use the sheepskin harness cover I already owned and to pick up an extender from the parts department the next day. I've always used them and it never for a moment occurred to me that the parts department wouldn't carry them.]
