Poole-Rosenthal numbers tell us that the Democrats
haven't moved left, the Republicans have moved right.
Indeed, the Republicans have moved so far to the right
that ordinary voters have trouble taking it in; as I pointed
out in an earlier column, focus groups literally refused to
believe accurate descriptions of the stimulus bill that
House Republican leaders passed on a party-line vote
back in October.

That's a phenomena that I see in many GOP issues. They control the electorate's view of the position by platitudes and rhetoric, relying on the likelihood that people won't actually look into the issue in any detail. Even when they do get confronted with the facts...it so conflicts with the rhetoric that they cannot accept the facts.

Say "We're going to save Social Security" a thousand times. Then do whatever you want. You might recall a House GOP memo that was circulating some time ago that referred to a GOP poll on health care. The memo said that you don't have to have a plan on health care...you just have to say that you do...don't mention any specifics, because you can be criticized on the specifics...just say you have a plan and leave it at that.

Another variant is to rant on the evils of socialized medicine, throw in a few anecdotal stories, chatter about the goodness of free markets and the private sector....as in prescription drugs for the elderly...and then let it fade into the background...if it comes up during the next election...it was that mean-spirited Tom Daschle and the mean-spirited Easter Bunny that did the dirty deed. No one is going to check into what really happened; too much work.
