They were not there for leisure or sightseeing however.

I wasn't entirely serious about that point <s>.

What we do seem to know for certain is that the city itself was civilian and it had swelled above the normal population. I don't believe that there is any debate over that. I have seen in a couple of places mention made of the leaflets dropped over Germany and in other places there is no mention of them. Having not been personally there in 1945, it's hard for me to be certain what might be the truth on that point.

Given the bombing was accomplished over serveral days and the military targets were not hit...it's hard too argue...ooops, the Allies just missed. The Allies: Britain, the US and the Russians all cooperated in this to one degree or another. Who had the lead, whether it was Britain or the Russians is debated but in the end, they all were participants.

As Americans we might like to point the finger at the Brits or Russians; the Brits might like to point a finger at the Russians....the Russians don't seem to give a shit where any fingers are pointing <s>. But I believe that there is dirt under all the fingernails.

We suffer from wanting to believe that our hat is always a pristine white and the others are pitch black covered in dung. Soldiers handed out chocolate bars and nylons to the girls for other reasons than just being nice guys.

One of the questions that I've had on Churchill is related to his allowing Coventry to be bombed rather than taking the risk that the Germans would discover that the German codes were broken. I neither condemn or applaud that decision, but I wonder what he thought of it after the war. I haven't seen anything on that in particular, perhaps someone else has.
