JC, I am 100% sure that religion is all false, that there is not now, nor has there ever been a god. I see no evidence of any god around me, all is evolved from the primordial soup. The time line is endless, no start and no ending, it will go on forever and has been going on forever.
Any time marking events like the big bang are human creations. there can have been an infinite number of big bangs and contractions
You have no need of a set of beliefs at all. All you need is an operating knowledge of people and the facts of the universe. These facts are as mundane as the time the 8 AM train will arrive and the faith you put in that prediction is far more than any faith I have in any religion.

After we live we die and nothing remains, save our DNA descendants and out bones. We may creat a permanent thing, like a pyramid, or we may paint some graffiti that persists Men have no more souls than cats and ants or bacteria, but men have a better operating knowledge and intelligence about the universe. Few cats or ants construct theorems.

the human desire for his/her life to be permanent in some way has given a fertile ground for the priests to make theories. Many tell those that believe in them that they will go to heaven or hell, depending on how much $$ they give the priests.(called death bed benevolences by the catholics...they shorten time in purgatory so you get to heaven faster) People do not like to see death as the final end to them. They want to think they will carry on forever, even in some abstraction such or heaven or hell.

Religions form self fooling gangs of people who all hue to the same set of beliefs and after life promises. Their happiness if a form of self denial of their final death.

One thing man has is the ability to extend his life through greater knowledge of our genes and some day our lifes will not have any limit except for accidents. Right now if we had immortality we would live to an average lifespan of about 190 in perfect health. Death being due entirely to accidents of various kinds. Some would never have an accident and live forever. some die each day. In this situation we will become more careful and extend our lives.

Yes, yes, that's all and good. But I don't *have* any beliefs. Are you saying that you do not think it a good idea for me to ask people about their beliefs? However else will I be able to find a set of beliefs for myself? I have noticed that people who believe in things happen to be a lot happier than, say, me, and I like to try all things that could potentially make me a better and/or happier person.

I am unclear how you know that people who believe in things are happier than you? I knew someone a while back who firmly believed that we were fertilizer when we die. He had a strong science background which prompted a belief system that required definite empirical evidence before something could be believed. I can safely say that he was not a better/safer person than most people I suspect also including you.

I think the major good thing about Petz's beliefs in God is that it may permit him to view death without a lot of fear. That probably is not the case with non believers. I, like the person I mentioned earlier, require more proof when it comes to God and other such matters.

Do you consider atheism to be a belief?
