Boom. You just answered your question. In part, at least.

Aahhh, now I understand. Its not just believing something..its believing in a god and a life after dead that makes people happier....because like I said in a later post, there are people like my former friend that believe there is no life after death and he was not any happier than anyone else.

I suppose its comforting to believe that your soul continues after you die but then if you believe that, wouldn't you believe just about every single thing you've told in your life. I guess that's the easiest way to live....kind of takes the guess work out of life. Then you never have to question anything and you never do anything that might challenge those beliefs. So when they said that the earth was flat, it was best to stay in the village in which you were born and not travel too much for fear of falling off the edge.

But honestly, is that better? I don't think so. Is that happier? Maybe, or is just feeling safer....one less thing to worry about?! I guess I believe if you are inclined to question things than there are no taboo areas....and whether you worry or don't worry everyone ends up at the same place......wherever that is.
