Capital Blue Cross Selects Express Scripts To
Provide Pharmacy Benefits to Its Members

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 1, 2002, Capital Blue
Cross members began receiving their prescription drug benefits through Express
Scripts, Inc., one of the largest independent, full-service pharmacy benefit
managers in North America. "Capital Blue Cross is very impressed with Express
Scripts' commitment to provide the greatest value and service to our members
while helping to manage the pharmacy benefit in a cost-effective and efficient
manner," said James M. Mead, Capital Blue Cross president & CEO. "Express
Scripts is a top-notch company, so we are confident that our members will be
pleased with our new partnership."
Express Scripts currently serves more than 47.5 million members
nationwide. It processes more than 250 million prescription claims a year and
dispenses more than 20 million mail service prescriptions annually.
"Express Scripts is very pleased to have been named by Capital Blue Cross
to manage the pharmacy benefit for its 775,000 members who are eligible for
prescription drug coverage," said Barrett Toan, Express Scripts chairman and
CEO. "We have been very successful in helping plan sponsors across the country
rein in rising drug costs while continuing to provide their members with
access to effective, high-quality medications."
Toan said that Express Scripts expects to produce impressive results
for Capital Blue Cross through a collaborative process which includes a
customized drug-trend management strategy, flexible plan designs and clinical
programs that help hold down costs while improving treatment outcomes. Toan
added that Express Scripts' automated Mail Service Pharmacy has the capacity
and operational efficiency to successfully handle Capital Blue Cross' mail
order volume.
One of the first items of business for the two companies was to issue new
prescription drug program identification cards and\or mail service materials
for all eligible members. These items, mailed by Express Scripts to arrive
prior to Dec. 31, 2001, is all that members need to fill their prescriptions
under the new vendor.
Members with questions about pharmacy benefits should call the toll-free
member services phone number at 800-585-5794.
