Not illegal. But the perfidious Jeffords ran on the GOP ticket in 2000, endorsing Bush and the platform.

The only thing that changed from November 2000 when Jeffords won and the few months later when he switched was that Thurmond was ailing and Jeffords thought he could manage to profit from his death.
