It is a mistake to think of some marginal benefit from a program like SDI without considering that the money could be well spent elsewhere. This could be additional defense or could involve making the U.S. so important economicly to other countries that they lose their incentive to try and destroy us. A tightly knit global economy is more likely to lead to lasting peace than another "next" generation of missles.
