I am not sure if the US should not trust this man. When he was the joint chief of staff in Pak Armed forces in Oct 1998, Prime Minister of India (Vajpayee) went on a self initiated and historic bus trip to Lahore to establish a peaceful dialogue. The then Pak prime minister and Musharaf undermined the peace process initiated by India by deploying Pakistani troops (not Kashmiri "freedom fighters") at Kargil inside India. This was possible because during winter, India maintained little or no military presence at Kargil. When spring of 1999 came, the Pak army staged a gorilla war on Indian troops returning for patrol at Kargil. India eventually prevailed - not before suffering massive casualities. Pak had to retreat in humiliation - but Pakistan always denied any role in the ambush. They insisted that all the men there are Kashmiri fighters. When Clinton administration was presented with all the proof of Pakistani regular troop involvement, Clinton pleaded India for ceding some land for Pak. Vajpayee stood firm. Pak had to retreat in humiliation. The Pakistani armed forces did not like the diplomatic blunder made by their elected leaders. The result? Musharaf staged a coup in late 1999. Not too long after he tookover (I think), the Pakistani embassy in Nepal played a role in helping the Al Queda members (they are also the so called Kashmiri freedom fighters) smuggle weapons into the Indian Airlines flight that was hijacked to Khandahar in Afghanistan. As usual, Pakistani officials denied any role in hijacking. However, given the state of the failed state called Pakistan, one has to wonder.. Why is that US never declared Pakistan a terrorist state. Also, Musharaf's frequent visits to Beijing (3 in 14 days) must please the Bush administration.
