The current system contemplated is much more modest than the original SDI. It does not aspire to defend against massive launches, and has nothing to do with MAD. Therefore, I had supposed we were talking about the more robust version, which would be set against ICBMs.......

I don't think that the DOD is planning to build a system to intercept ballistic missiles coming from Mexico or Canada. From what I understand, the current system, was placed in the South Pacific, and shot down a missile fired from California (of course, it could have been the other way around).

The Patriot II's, III's and the Israeli Arrow are for shorter range missiles (I believe that the Patriots used in the Gulf War were Patriot I's).

BTW I've read that several European have Patriots II's in their inventories. I also understand that the Soviets violated the ABM treaty for much of the Treaty's existence (including building a "National" ABM system).
