And what happened to the ones who panicked and fled? Were they allowed by Israel to return to their homes?

What happened to the peace following the war? What happened to Arab recognition of Israel? What happened to over 600,000 Jews in the Arab lands, who fled for their lives? How could Ben Gurion possibly let them back in with hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees on his hands and all the Arab neighbors promising, 'we'll get you next time'?

It was indeed, rough luck on the Arab refugees, who fled in a panic and became political pawns for 50 years. It was likewise, rough luck on the Jewish refugees, though not as bad for them because they were resettled, not kept as pawns.
