Convicted Abortion Facility Owner Denied New Trial in Abortion Death Source: Sacramento Bee, Associated Press; 6/12/99 SAN FRANCISCO -- An abortion facility owner convicted of murdering a woman during an abortion and caught stuffing the woman's body in the trunk of a car was denied a new trial Thursday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Thursday there was ample evidence for the jury's conclusion that abortion facility owner Alicia Hanna showed a "wanton disregard for life," as required for a murder conviction in an unintentional killing. Hanna, who has no medical training, was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison for second-degree murder in the death of Angela Nieto Sanchez, 27, in January 1993. According to trial testimony, Hanna injected Sanchez with a drug in preparation for an abortion and Sanchez had a seizure. Hanna prevented an assistant from making a 911 call for help. After she died, Hanna told two of Sanchez's children, who were waiting outside, that their mother had left without them, witnesses said. After leaving and then returning to the abortion facility, the children found Hanna trying to stuff Sanchez's body into the trunk of a car.
