The shortage of Pentium 4 processors and DDR SDRAM has given rise to strong demand for 0.13-micron-fabricated Celeron 1.2GHz processors and their accompanying Socket 370-based chipsets.*(insert Amdroid or Intelabee spin here) The favorable price of Celeron processors has also helped boost demand. Intel plans to launch its latest 1.3GHz Celeron this month for US$118 per unit. On January 27, it will cut the price to US$103 and the price of the Celeron 1.2GHz to US$89. To meet the demand for its Socket 370-based chipsets, VIA is increasing production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) but says that the supply problem will not be resolved until after mid-January at the earliest. VIA remains wary about the surging demand, suggesting that it may be a short-term phenomenon. Last month, Intel-platform chipsets accounted for around 55% of VIA’s shipments, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)-compliant chipsets 45%. Of the total, 30% were P4 chipsets while the Socket 370 line (for Celeron and Pentium III processors) only constituted 25%. VIA predicts that its shipment ratio of Socket 370-based chipsets will rise to 30% for January. Motherboard company sources said that supplies of VIA’s 694T and PLE133 chipsets and SiS’s 630ET have all been extremely tight. Nevertheless, one board maker said it is still considering raising its Pentium III board shipments in January to cope with the P4 and DDR SDRAM shortage, especially as the price of Socket 370-based chipsets is unlikely to go up.
