Samsung Electronic may raise chip price in mid-January

sg.news.yahoo.com

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Tuesday it is likely to raise contract chip prices in mid-January.

The world's largest computer memory chipmaker raised contract chip prices twice in December.

"We expect our chip unit to post an operating loss in the fourth quarter after reporting 380 billion won ($294.1 million) in minus earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in Q3," Kim Kwang-tae, vice president at Samsung's corporate communications team, told Reuters.

Samsung plans to announce fourth quarter results on January 16.

Korean rival Hynix Semiconductor Inc <00660>, the world's third largest memory chip maker, raised contract prices on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips by an average 30 percent last week in its third hike in a month.

Analysts said makers were moving to raise prices due to a rise in spot prices.
