Well, guess what, the reason may well have been that the Bushies let Wolfowitz out to talk to the Times, for whatever mysterious reason, I can only imagine. The interview is a classic diplomatic blunder. Almost certain to remind the rest of the globe just how insufferably arrogant US policy makers can be. I would guess it's one thing to say these things in private, but yet another to say them in public.

You think it's a blunder? I would call it a good cop (Powell), bad cop (Wolfowitz) routine -- clean up your act now, boys, or we will offer you our "assistance". If it gets results, so much the better. When the 800 pound gorilla is quiescent, you complain about his arrogance. But when he's pissed, you get out of his way.

As for Iraq, from the articles I've read in the WSJ and other places, what Arab diplomats are saying in private is, "You swear that you will finish Saddam this time?" They are resigned to the campaign and are just praying it will be quick.
