Ballard shares climb as smaller fuel cell unveiled

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Shares of Ballard Power Systems (Toronto:BLD.TO - news) jumped on Tuesday after the company unveiled an upgraded fuel cell for power and heating generators aimed at the Japanese residential market.

The Canadian company and its affiliates, which have been developing the generators in conjunction with Tokyo Gas , said the new 1 kw fuel cells are 40 percent smaller than earlier models and operate at higher efficiency.

On Nasdaq, Ballard was up 7 percent in midday trading at $32.5 per share. The stock has more the doubled since mid-September, when it hit a 52-week low of $14.01. It is still far short of its 52-week high of $78.93.

Ballard's shares on the Toronto Exchange were up C$3.29 at

C$51.96.

The residential cogeneration units under development in Japan are not expected to be available for commercial sale until 2004. Ballard is also developing cogeneration units in Japan with Osaka Gas .

Ballard's fuel cells make electricity by forcing hydrogen through a proton membrane. The cells are viewed as environmentally friendly because their only emissions are water and heat -- although the equipment used to process hydrogen from fuels such as natural gas can produce pollutants.

The new Ballard EBARA residential unit comprises the fuel cell, a water tank and a hydrogen reformer. Ballard said the new prototype cell's smaller size makes it feasible for use in small homes.

($1 equals $1.60 Canadian)

Corned Beef Gas Man, <edited version>

I'm trying to figure a way to play a bounce in natural gas prices without having to resort to buying gas futures.
Do you have any ideas as to which companies should prosper with a jump in price?
Is there an index stock for such companies.
I believe Scott Mantz mentioned one that dealt with oil companies but I'm not sure it contained any of the gaseous type of companies I'm looking for.

I'm looking at the chart for Natural Gas and I'm beginning to think about doing some bottom fishing.
Heard of any gas service companies or anything?
I figured you may have stumbled across a few in your hunt for energy stocks.

P.S. I remember someone mentioning a company that used natural gas and combined it with other stuff to make some sort of synthetic fuel. I can't rmember the name of the company. I thought their product was called something like syntrol or something weird like that but I may be way off. My methane fumes have been burning my brain cells. I think Chevron and Texico were experimenting with their technology.
It was a cheap stock at the time when energy prices were sky high last year. Somewhere near a dollar a share.
Does anyone recall that company? Dealie perhaps? Or maybe Eyedoc. I remember him asking the dude questions about it along with myself. I can't even remember who it was who mentioned here.
