U.S. data more mixed than negative -Fed's Ferguson

GENEVA, Jan 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Roger Ferguson said on Tuesday that U.S. data had moved to be more mixed than negative but it was too early to pinpoint the timing of an economic recovery.

``The data that have come in have moved from being mostly negative to more mixed.... There are some positive elements and some negative elements. Last year the information was more heavily negative,'' he told reporters after giving a lecture to the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies.

Asked about the timing of a U.S. economic recovery, he replied: ``While data has been mixed, it's too early to have a strong conviction about exactly what contours a turnaround in the U.S. economy are likely to be.''
