"It's basically a nForce without integrated graphics. I wonder who will buy this chipset?"

It does offer nVidia a chipset that they could lowball to leverage some marketshare without cutting into their graphics chipset business. But even without cutting it's price to the bone, it will have better audio, likely better PCI transfer speed (remember VIA's little "problem"?), and better bandwidth to the drives.

ASUS is going to use it in one of their boards. Basically, you have the advantage of the audio, ethernet and bandwidth (HT) and this will allow for a third party video card without the chance of driver issues.

Asus to re-vamp Nforce A7N266

Cross-bred beastie soon
By Mike Magee <mailto:newsdesk@theinquirer.net>, 07/01/2002 11:32:07 BST
MOLES NOT A MILLION miles away from Brazil tell the INQUIRER that Asus is set to re-vamp its Nforce based motherboard at the end of the month.
According to our information, the mobo will likely be called the A7N266C, and while it will employ the Nforce chipset, have Dolby Digital 5.1 and onboard Ethernet, the onboard graphics will be disabled.
While it will still use 128-bit Twinbank DDR memory and the rest, it is intended as a "cost effective" (cheaper) Nforce based board, for those folks who want o plug in a Radeon 8500 or a Geforce Titanium.
Now there's a turnup for the books. µ

I would presume it is a cheaper version to produce.

RE:"Didn't see this posted yet. It's basically a nForce without integrated graphics. I wonder who will buy this chipset?"

A lot of people. Especially those who want to add a high end video card and don't want to buy a 420 and not use the on chip video.
A lot of people don't trust VIA either...
