Man at Chicago airport had flares, knives

CHICAGO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - A 20-year-old man was charged on Tuesday with attempting to board a Florida-bound flight with a weapon or explosive device -- in this case, two road flares -- in his duffel bag that also contained an assortment of knives, ammunition, and a box cutter.

In an affidavit filed by the FBI, Steven Johnson, whose last known address was his mother's home in Marshalltown, Iowa, told agents he had planned to check his bag but told a ticket agent he first wanted to get coffee at a stand located beyond the security checkpoint at Chicago's Midway Airport when he was stopped on Monday.

Authorities did not indicate what Johnson told them about his intentions. He had a one-way ticket on American Trans Air (NasdaqNM:AMTR - news) flight 710 for Orlando later that day.

Whether the flares in Johnson's bag were secured in checked luggage or packed in a carry-on bag, they violated a federal law that carries a potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney in Chicago said. He could face additional charges.

Johnson, sporting shoulder-length hair, a goatee, black leather cowboy boots, and a two-toned shirt, was ordered held pending a preliminary hearing on Friday.

The FBI said Johnson admitted he packed his bag with the flares, three pocket knives, another knife with a concealed blade, 16 rounds of ammunition of unspecified nature, handcuffs, a box cutter, a bottle of lighter fluid, and a lighter.

The handcuffs were spotted on a security scanner at the airport, and a hand search turned up the other banned items. Johnson was arrested by Chicago police and turned over to the

Fbi.

Authorities said Johnson, whose current address was not known, had been ``drifting'' and may have been in the Chicago area for at least a week prior to the flight.

In unrelated incidents a Ji Du DuJ??1/2?'s other major airport, O'Hare International, a man from Nepal was charged with a federa Du Du'???ning agents with carry-on bags containing, knives, pepper spray and a stun gun, while an elderly chef from Hong Kong caught with meat cleavers was not charged. The Nepalese man remained in custody with his case pending.
