I don't think people who didn't live through the 30s and 40s, and haven't talked intimately with people who have, truly understand how close the world came to being facist, or understand what that would have meant. Movies like Schindler's List try to show some of the aspects of it, but fall far short. I was born in the later years of the war, so have no personal memory of it, but for my parents and their friends it was a direct and intimate memory, and since my mother's family was Eastern European, it had a particular significant to us.
