I wouldn't be quite so sanguine about eMachines, if I were you. eMachines is what pulled the carpet out from under HP and Compaq in retail.

They seem to have cleaned up their act and to be selling decent machines lately. I know about a half dozen people who've bought $500 eMachines with Celerons during the past few months, and none have experienced the problems typical of those machines in the past. This is an important market for AMD to get back into. It is also going to make it hard for any company to charge a lot more than $1000 for a standard box.

Another thing to consider is that the actual cost of shipping a PC (with monitor) is about $60 (mail order companies often charge quite a bit more, or subsidize the cost). As PC prices continue to come down, and shipping and handling costs stay flat or rise, that $60 will become more significant and may put Dell's model under pressure.
